Human Rights

Human rights are defined as the basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person in the world, from birth until death. They apply equally, regardless of where you are from, what you believe or how you choose to live your life, although they are not applied equally across the world, unfortunately.

Your basic human rights can never be taken away, though they can be restricted – if you are charged with a crime, for example – in certain circumstances. These rights are based on shared values like dignity, fairness, equality, respect and independence, which are defined and protected by law.

In the UK, our human rights are enshrined in law by the Human Rights Act 1998 which safeguards (and sets acceptable) limits for the exercise of our freedoms and protection of our rights.
