To apply for naturalisation, you must be over 18, of good character, able to speak good English, able to pass the Life in the UK test, intending to live in the UK and able to meet the residence requirements.

The Home Office will also look into your background and criminal record, potentially denying citizenship if you have past convictions, have evaded tax, previously been denied citizenship, lied or misled the UK Government.

As part of your application, you will need to pass the Life in the UK test. The test costs £50, has 24 questions (a minimum of 16 have to be answered correctly), and lasts around 45 minutes.

In order to become a UK citizen, you must have been living in the UK continuously for 6 years, during which you cannot leave the UK for more than 450 days. You must hold permanent residence of have indefinite leave to Remain during the last 12 months of the 6-year period.
